Egypt squad gathers in Cairo as Haitham Hassan due to join before Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

All of Egypt’s overseas-based players have arrived at the national team’s training camp in Cairo, with the exception of Celtic winger Haitham Hassan.

Hassan is expected to reach the capital on Tuesday and will take part in Egypt’s training session immediately after his arrival.

Nice defender Mohamed Abdelmonem is also due to arrive in Cairo in the coming hours, after his journey was delayed.

The players have assembled ahead of Egypt’s opening Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Angola and South Sudan.

Egypt will face Angola on 25 September and South Sudan on 29 September in the first two rounds of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

They will then play a friendly against South Africa on 4 October.

Mohamed Salah took part only in rehabilitation exercises in the gym as he continues to manage his workload. The Trabzonspor player is expected to join the full squad session on Tuesday.

Salah arrives at international duty in strong form after helping his club beat Galatasaray in their most recent match before the international break.

He scored a hat-trick and provided the assist for his team’s fourth goal in the Turkish league fixture, played in the sixth round of the season.

The performance took Salah’s league tally for the campaign to seven goals, making him the leading scorer in the Turkish league.
