Egypt–Spain friendly scrapped, visa hurdles derail World Cup plans
Egypt’s planned international friendly against Spain national football team later this month has been cancelled, disrupting a key element of both sides’ preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The match, originally scheduled for March 31 in Doha, was called off following a combination of regional security concerns and logistical setbacks, according to sources close to the Egyptian Football Association.
The cancellation comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Gulf after recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which have triggered widespread travel disruptions across major transit hubs in the region.
Several sporting events have already been shelved due to safety concerns, and Egypt’s high-profile fixture against the European champions has now been added to that list.
Efforts to salvage the tie by relocating it to Spain were unsuccessful. One source indicated that the proposal collapsed due to “organisational reasons”, while another pointed to administrative constraints involving travel documentation. “Some of the Egyptian players did not have visas to enter Spain or Europe, and there was no time to apply due to the upcoming holidays,” the second source said.
Financial and logistical disagreements further complicated matters. Qatar had initially agreed to cover the full cost of hosting the fixture, but revised conditions under a potential relocation proved less favourable.
“The two federations also failed to reach an agreement on other details. Qatar had previously covered all costs, but the situation was different this time,” the source added.
Egypt will now turn their attention to a revised schedule, beginning with a friendly against Saudi Arabia national football team in Jeddah on March 27.
Meanwhile, Spain have moved swiftly to adjust their plans, lining up a fixture against Serbia national football team on the same date after their previously anticipated ‘Finalissima’ clash with Argentina national football team was also scrapped.
Looking ahead to the World Cup, Egypt face a demanding Group G campaign alongside Belgium national football team, New Zealand national football team and Iran national football team.
Spain, on the other hand, will compete in Group H against Cape Verde national football team, Saudi Arabia national football team and Uruguay national football team, as both nations recalibrate their build-up under challenging circumstances.
