Egypt set six records in five-goal victory over South Sudan

Egypt’s 5-0 win over South Sudan in the second round of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers produced six notable milestones for the Pharaohs.

Omar Marmoush scored twice, while Zico, Ibrahim Adel and Hamza Abdelkarim were also on target as Egypt moved on to four points in the group.

The result was the biggest victory of Hossam Hassan’s 37-match reign as Egypt manager. Hassan has led the national team throughout that period, with the emphatic win becoming the largest margin recorded under his leadership.

For Hamza Abdelkarim, the match marked a first in an Egypt shirt. The forward scored his first goal for the national team and also registered the first official senior goal of his career.

That landmark came after his spells with Al Ahly and Barcelona, his current club, as well as his appearances for Egypt.

Marmoush ended a lengthy wait for a goal by scoring twice against South Sudan. The Tottenham Hotspur forward had gone 139 days and 17 matches without finding the net for either club or country.

The two goals also brought another personal milestone. Marmoush had never previously scored twice in the same match for Egypt, despite having made 57 appearances for the national side.

South Sudan’s defeat was their heaviest at home. The 5-0 scoreline matched their biggest home loss, which also came against Senegal by the same margin.

Egypt’s final milestone involved Mohannad Lasheen, who set up one of Marmoush’s goals. It was the midfielder’s first assist for the national team in his 29th appearance for the Pharaohs.

The victory gave Egypt four points from the opening two rounds of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
