Egypt see off Guinea-Bissau with 1-0 win to end 2026 World Cup qualifiers unbeaten
Egypt rounded off their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau at the Cairo International Stadium, maintaining their unbeaten run and securing a perfect record in Group A.
The Pharaohs started strongly, dominating possession and creating early chances. In the ninth minute, Mostafa Mohamed came close to breaking the deadlock after connecting with a cross from Ahmed Sayed Zizo, but the Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper pulled off a fine save.
Just three minutes later, Egypt found their breakthrough. Mohamed Hamdy finished off a superb attacking move, slotting home from close range after a precise cross from Ahmed Nabil Kouka to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Zizo continued to cause problems down the flank, sending in another dangerous cross that found Ibrahim Adel, but his header sailed over the bar. Egypt maintained control throughout the first half, though they couldn’t extend their advantage before the break.
In the second half, the hosts pushed for a second goal, with Mostafa Mohamed coming close again in the 57th minute after a cross from Mohamed Hany, but his effort went narrowly wide.
Guinea-Bissau nearly equalised in the 63rd minute with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, but Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi was alert to the danger, later denying another attempt in the 76th minute before the referee blew for a foul.
The final stages saw little threat from either side, with play largely confined to midfield. Egypt held on comfortably to secure a 1-0 win, their ninth victory in ten matches.
The result sees Egypt finish top of Group A with 26 points, completing the qualifiers without a single defeat, while Guinea-Bissau remain in fourth place with 10 points.
