Egypt reach African women’s volleyball final with Los Angeles 2028 place in sight

Egypt’s women’s volleyball team moved into the final of the African Women’s Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 victory over Rwanda, taking their winning run to 17 consecutive matches and moving closer to a historic Olympic qualification.

Egypt dominated the opening set, winning 25-5, before Rwanda offered greater resistance in the second, which Egypt took 25-17. The third set was closely contested, but Egypt eventually secured it 32-30 to complete a straight-sets victory.

The African Women’s Volleyball Championship is being held in Kenya from 23 August to 5 September 2026, with 16 national teams taking part.

Egypt will discover their final opponents after the other semi-final between Kenya and Cameroon. The final is scheduled for Friday at 16:00.

By reaching the final, Egypt have also secured qualification for the World Championship. It is the fifth time the team have advanced to the final of the African tournament, and the second occasion in succession.

Victory in the final would bring an additional prize. If Egypt win the title, they will claim Africa’s place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, securing qualification for the first time in the history of the women’s team.

Egypt are also seeking their first African title since 2003, when they won the tournament in Kenya. They have won the competition three times in total, a record they share with Cameroon and Tunisia.

Kenya are the most successful team in the tournament’s history, having collected 10 titles. They are also the side who defeated Egypt in the previous final, winning 3-0 in the 2023 edition staged in Cameroon.

Egypt’s latest victory therefore gives them the opportunity to avenge that defeat while competing for both continental honours and a place at the Olympics. Their unbeaten run now stands at 17 matches, with Rwanda unable to overturn the early deficit after Egypt established control in the opening set.

The final will determine whether Egypt can return to the top of African women’s volleyball for the first time in 23 years. A win would not only deliver their fourth continental championship, but would also secure a place at Los Angeles 2028 and mark a landmark achievement for the team.
