Egypt moves closer to AFCON qualification after consecutive wins
The Egyptian national football team is edging closer to securing a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, set to be held in Morocco between December 2025 and January 2026.
This follows a string of three consecutive victories in the qualification rounds.
In their latest triumph, Egypt defeated Mauritania 2-0 in a crucial match held at Cairo International Stadium.
Both goals came in the second half, with Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet opening the scoring in the 69th minute, followed by a strike from star forward Mohamed Salah in the 79th minute.
The victory bolstered Egypt’s position at the top of Group C, with nine points from three matches, maintaining a perfect record.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde, Botswana, and Mauritania are all level on points, trailing behind the group leaders.
Head coach Hossam Hassan fielded a formidable lineup featuring key players such as Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush, and Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet, giving the team a powerful attacking edge that proved decisive in their recent matches.
Elsewhere in the qualifiers, Tunisia suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Comoros, raising concerns about their chances of advancing.
In other matches, Madagascar drew 1-1 with Gambia, while both Côte d’Ivoire and Angola secured vital wins that brought them closer to qualification.
Egypt has a rich history in the Africa Cup of Nations, having participated in the tournament 26 times, making it one of the most frequent competitors in the competition’s history.
With the latest wins, the team appears well on track to add yet another AFCON campaign to their legacy, aiming to build on their reputation as one of Africa’s footballing powerhouses.
The road to Morocco remains challenging, but Egypt’s recent performances have strengthened their position as favorites to advance, with fans hopeful that the team will continue its successful run in the upcoming matches.
