Egypt media regulator praises Al Ahly and Zamalek channels for improved coverage

Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation has praised the recent performance of Al Ahly and Zamalek’s television channels, as well as Zamalek Radio, saying the platforms have shown clear progress and greater commitment to professional standards.

The council said its monitoring had identified a noticeable improvement in the sports media output of the two channels and the radio station. It also confirmed that daily oversight of their work would continue.

The statement was issued by the committee responsible for regulating sports media performance, which is chaired by counsellor Abdelsalam El Nagar, Vice-President of the State Council and a member of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation.

The council said the assessment was carried out as part of monitoring work conducted by its General Administration of Monitoring, alongside the committee’s continued review of sports media coverage.

It said the latest results showed stronger adherence to professional rules and standards, following an agreement reached at a meeting between the committee and representatives of Al Ahly Channel, Zamalek Channel and Zamalek Radio on Tuesday, 21 July.

The council also highlighted what it described as a more balanced and objective approach from programme presenters. According to the statement, presenters had moved away from content that could contribute to hostility, tension or excessive partisanship among supporters.

The regulator said this change could help create a healthier atmosphere for sporting competition, based on respect and responsibility.

“The committee for regulating sports media performance at the Supreme Council for Media Regulation praises the development in the performance of Al Ahly and Zamalek channels and ‘Zamalek Radio’ and confirms the continuation of daily monitoring,” the statement said.

It added: “As part of the monitoring carried out by the General Administration of Monitoring at the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, and the follow-up by the committee for regulating sports media performance, chaired by Counsellor Abdelsalam El Nagar, Vice-President of the State Council and a member of the council, a notable development was observed in the media performance of Al Ahly and Zamalek channels, in addition to Zamalek Radio.”

The statement continued: “The monitoring results showed improved compliance with professional standards and regulations, and implementation of what had been agreed during the committee’s meeting with officials from the two channels and the radio station on Tuesday, 21 July. Programme presenters also showed a keenness to provide more balanced and objective content and to avoid approaches that could contribute to inciting fanaticism or tension among supporters, helping to strengthen an atmosphere of sporting competition based on respect and responsibility.”

The committee said it welcomed the improvement and described compliance with the codes and professional standards governing sports coverage as a positive step towards supporting responsible sports journalism.

It said the approach would also help reinforce fair competition and respect for everyone involved in the sporting system. The committee expressed hope that the same direction would continue in the coming period, contributing to a more professional and balanced sports media environment.

It added that communication with officials from the three media platforms was continuing, allowing observations to be discussed as they arose and helping to support compliance with professional regulations and responsible media performance.
