Egyptian football icon Ahmed Hassan has paid a powerful tribute to Senegal star Sadio Mane after his decisive intervention during the AFCON 2025 final between Senegal and Morocco in Rabat.
Senegal clinched the title with a 1–0 win at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, securing a precious second continental crown.
The turning point came when Senegal coach Pape Thiaw ordered his players to leave the pitch in protest at a penalty awarded to Morocco. The Lions of Teranga headed towards the dressing room, but captain Mane stepped in, calming tempers and convincing his teammates to return and resume the final. His reaction helped protect the image of African football on one of its biggest stages.
Writing on Instagram, Ahmed Hassan said: “If I were in charge and had a decision-making position in the African Union, I would create an award similar to the Nobel Prize and give it to Senegalese player Sadio Mane under the name of the Responsibility Award for saving the reputation and image of African football.”
He added: “Mane proved he’s not only the best player in the African Cup of Nations but also a leader without the armband. He showed up when it mattered with a decision that is the greatest in the history of Senegalese football. All hail him and the Senegalese team who won the title, and hard luck to Morocco.”
Hassan’s words captured how Mane’s decision went beyond football, turning him into a symbol of responsibility, leadership and respect for the game across the continent.
