Egypt hold Spain with 10 men in key pre-World Cup showdown
Egypt delivered a resilient performance to hold Spain to a goalless draw in an international friendly, producing a surprising result ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The encounter, played at Espanyol’s stadium on Tuesday evening, served as a key preparation fixture for both sides as they fine-tune their squads for the global showpiece set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico next summer.
Despite being reduced to ten men late in the game, Egypt showed remarkable discipline and composure to preserve the result. Hamdi Fathi was sent off in the 85th minute, but the Pharaohs held firm to deny the world’s top-ranked side.
At the heart of Egypt’s resistance was goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, whose impressive display kept Spain at bay. The Spanish side dominated possession and pushed forward relentlessly, but struggled to break through a well-organized Egyptian defense.
Spain’s Pressure Meets Egyptian Resistance
Spain, under coach Luis de la Fuente, approached the match with a heavily rotated squad, making ten changes from the team that faced Serbia. Young star Lamine Yamal was the only player to retain his place in the starting lineup.
In contrast, Egypt maintained a largely unchanged side following their victory over Saudi Arabia, with Mohannad Lasheen coming in for Mahmoud Hassan as the only adjustment.
Spain began the match on the front foot, applying sustained pressure with the backing of their home supporters. However, their early dominance failed to translate into clear-cut chances, as Egypt’s defensive structure remained solid throughout the opening stages.
While Spain controlled possession, Egypt posed a threat on the counterattack. Their best chance of the first half came in the 29th minute when Omar Marmoush unleashed a powerful strike that crashed against the left post.
Spain came closest just before the break, when Alejandro Grimaldo surged forward from the left and delivered a dangerous low cross that nearly found Yamal in front of goal, only for Hamdi Fathi to intervene and clear the danger.
In the end, Egypt’s resilience and defensive discipline proved decisive, earning them a morale-boosting result that sends a strong message ahead of the World Cup.
