Egypt hit South Sudan for five to reignite Africa Cup of Nations 2027 campaign

Egypt responded emphatically to their frustrating opening-day draw with Angola by thrashing South Sudan 5-0 in Juba on Tuesday.

The result gives the Pharaohs three valuable points in the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying campaign and provides a strong response after they were held in their first match.

Egypt gradually established control of the game and took the lead in the 36th minute. Mostafa Ziko finished the move to put Hossam Hassan’s side ahead, with Egypt maintaining their advantage until half-time.

The visitors increased the pressure after the interval and quickly extended their lead. Omar Marmoush struck in the 49th minute to make it 2-0 before Ibrahim Adel added a third with 15 minutes of normal time remaining.

Marmoush was one of Egypt’s most influential players and completed his double in the 83rd minute, effectively ending any prospect of a South Sudan recovery.

Egypt’s dominance was underlined again in stoppage time when Hamza Abdelkarim scored the fifth goal in the 90+2nd minute.

South Sudan were unable to respond to Egypt’s control and remained under pressure until the final whistle. The Pharaohs leave Juba with a convincing victory and renewed momentum following their opening draw with Angola.
