Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has made it clear that Al Ahly midfielder Imam Ashour will not be considered for national team selection unless he issues a public apology for what the coach described as acts of rebellion against the Pharaohs.
Hassan demands apology from Ashour
Speaking after Egypt’s victory over Sierra Leone, Hassan addressed Ashour’s absence, revealing that the 25-year-old had displayed unprofessional behavior during training sessions and had twice disrespected the team.
“Imam Ashour rebelled against the national team and must apologize to all of Egypt,” Hassan stated in the post-match press conference. “He did it twice—once when he kicked the ball in training, and another time when he said, ‘I am Nigerian.’”
The Egyptian coach did not hold back in his criticism, emphasizing that no player is bigger than the team or the country.
Ashour accused of faking injury
Hassan further accused the midfielder of feigning an injury to avoid national team duty.
“He claimed to be injured in order to leave the national team, but that was not true,” the former Al Ahly and Zamalek star said. “What he did is unacceptable. Until he apologizes to the Egyptian people, he will not return to the squad.”
The Pharaohs’ boss reiterated his stance on discipline within the team, stressing that representing Egypt is a privilege that comes with responsibility.
“As the head coach of Egypt, I am here to protect the name of the country. No one is above Egypt, and I will not tolerate any form of rebellion.”
Ashour’s future with the national team uncertain
Imam Ashour, a key figure for Al Ahly, has yet to respond to Hassan’s comments.
His absence from recent international fixtures has raised questions about his future with the national team, especially given Hassan’s firm stance on maintaining discipline.
With Egypt preparing for crucial upcoming matches, it remains to be seen whether Ashour will seek reconciliation or if his international career will be put on hold indefinitely.
