Egypt finish 23rd at U17 Womens Volleyball World Championship after Algeria win

Egypt’s women’s under-17 volleyball team finished 23rd and second-bottom at the Women’s Under-17 Volleyball World Championship after recording their only victory of the tournament against Algeria.

Egypt won 3-0 in the play-off match for 23rd and 24th place, bringing their campaign at the second edition of the competition to a close with one win from seven matches.

The result against Algeria was the team’s first success at the world championship. It came after a difficult group-stage campaign in which Egypt lost all five of their matches.

They were beaten by the United States, Turkiye, Czech Republic, Thailand and Chile during the opening phase. Across those five games, Egypt managed to take only two sets.

Their results improved slightly in the classification matches for teams finishing between 17th and 24th. Egypt began that phase with a narrow 3-2 defeat by Puerto Rico before losing 3-1 to Spain.

That left the team facing Algeria in the match to determine 23rd and 24th place. Egypt produced their most convincing result of the tournament in that final fixture, winning every set to claim a 3-0 victory.

Although Egypt finished near the bottom of the standings, Karma Abdel Moneim stood out individually and ended the championship among the competition’s leading scorers.

Abdel Moneim ranked sixth overall with 146 points. She finished only four points behind the player occupying fourth place, placing her just outside the top four scorers.

Her highest-scoring performance came in Egypt’s match against Chile, when she registered 26 points for her team. That contribution was not enough to prevent defeat, but it was the strongest individual scoring return of her tournament.

Egypt’s campaign therefore ended with a mixed conclusion: the team secured a clean-sheet-style 3-0 victory in their final match, but their overall record left them 23rd in the 24-team standings. Their only win came in the final classification game, while their group-stage opponents proved too strong and Puerto Rico and Spain also defeated them in the placement phase.
