Egypt FA official reveals plans to bid for 2028 AFCON and future World Cup
Egypt are considering submitting a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations as part of a wider ambition to stage the FIFA World Cup in the future.
Hamada El Sherbini, a member of the Egyptian Football Association’s board, said the country is working to further improve its sporting infrastructure with the aim of hosting major international competitions in the coming years.
Speaking to Mega FM radio, El Sherbini said Egypt’s historic performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup had provided fresh motivation to build on the national team’s success.
World Cup campaign inspires new ambition
Egypt reached the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup before their campaign ended with defeat to Argentina, marking one of the country’s best performances on football’s biggest stage.
El Sherbini said the public’s reaction to the team’s achievements had strengthened the federation’s determination to continue investing in Egyptian football.
He also expressed gratitude to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for honouring the national team following its World Cup campaign.
“This gesture greatly touched the hearts of all members of the delegation. The honor came from the heart and made everyone happy, and it will be an incentive for us to achieve more.”
AFCON first, World Cup next
The Egyptian Football Association views hosting another Africa Cup of Nations as an important step towards pursuing its longer-term objective of staging the FIFA World Cup.
El Sherbini said work is continuing to upgrade stadiums and sporting facilities before formal bids are submitted for future tournaments.
“We hope to complete the stadium file, and then apply to host the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations. We have hosted the African Cup of Nations more than once, and the next step is to bid to host the 2028 edition.”
Egypt has previously hosted the Africa Cup of Nations on several occasions and now hopes further infrastructure improvements will strengthen its position to welcome the continent’s biggest football competition once again.
Confidence in Egypt’s hosting credentials
El Sherbini concluded by expressing confidence that Egypt possesses the facilities and organisational capacity required to stage major international sporting events.
Should the bid materialise, Egypt would be seeking to bring the Africa Cup of Nations back to the country while also laying the foundation for an eventual bid to host the FIFA World Cup, reflecting the nation’s growing ambitions both on and off the pitch.
