Egypt FA in talks with Russia for friendly ahead of 2026 World Cup
Egyptian Football Association is stepping up efforts to secure a high-profile international friendly as part of its final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with plans focused on hosting a major test on home soil.
The global showpiece, to be co-hosted in the United Canada, and Mexico will feature an expanded 48 teams, with Egypt securing one of Africa’s nine automatic slots.
As the tournament approaches, the North African football heavyweights has intensiy their preparations in their quest to make a meaningful impact.
Currently, the Egyptian FA are in talks with Russia for a friendly match, to be staged at the new administrative capital stadium on home soil. The move is part of a broader strategy to fine-tune the squad ahead of the global showpiece.
While the Russian side has shown willingness to play the fixture, their federation has proposed hosting the match in Moscow, with a reported financial incentive of $150,000 for Egypt.
However, that offer has been turned down by Egyptian authorities and the national team’s technical crew, who are keen to avoid the physical toll of long-distance travel at such a critical stage of preparations.
Instead, the Egytpian FA is leveraging its strong sporting ties with its Russian counterpart to push for the game to be played in Egypt—ensuring maximum technical benefit without overburdening players before the tournament.
Contingency plans are already in place. Should negotiations with Russia collapse, the Serbia national football team has been identified as a viable alternative for a similarly competitive friendly within the same window.
Egypt’s preparations have already shown promising signs. The Pharaohs recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia national football team before holding the Spain national football team to a goalless draw in March—results that provided encouraging indicators for the coaching staff.
Drawn in Group G, Egypt will face stern but manageable competition from Belgium national football team, Iran national football team, and New Zealand national football team. With the tournament fast approaching, securing the right level of opposition in their final warm-up matches could prove crucial to their chances of making a deep run.
