Egypt earthquake felt across governorates as Al Ahly’s Ahmed Sayed Zizo stands alone among sports figures

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake shook most of Egypt during the early hours of Monday morning, prompting widespread discussion on social media but little visible reaction from the country’s sporting figures.

The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics said the earthquake was recorded 38 kilometres north of Suez. The tremor struck at about 03:00 local time, with reports of the movement reaching a large number of Egypt’s governorates.

Egypt’s Ministry of Health said on Facebook that field monitoring had identified only a limited number of minor injuries. Those injuries were dealt with, and no deaths were recorded, according to the ministry.

The strength and timing of the earthquake led many people to share their reactions online. The event occurred while much of the country was asleep, and its effects became a major topic of conversation in the early morning.

Artists were among the most prominent public figures to respond to the earthquake, with many commenting on the tremor through social media. The sporting community, however, was notable for its lack of public reaction.

The only sports figure identified as having engaged with the earthquake was Ahmed Sayed Zizo, the Al Ahly star. No other sporting personalities were reported to have reacted.

The incident therefore generated a clear contrast between the response from figures in entertainment and the silence from athletes and other sports personalities. While social media users discussed the earthquake widely, the attention surrounding the sporting world focused largely on the absence of comment.

The Al Ahly player’s reaction stood out against the broader absence of public engagement from footballers and other sporting figures.
