Egyptian Government Announces Resumption of Football Championship
Football is set to return to Egypt as the government has confirmed the resumption of the top-tier Egyptian Premier League, nearly three weeks after the tragic events in Cairo that led to the suspension of matches.
According to AFP, the Egyptian government announced on Wednesday that top-level football would resume after the 40-day mourning period following the fatal clashes between Zamalek supporters and police on February 8, which resulted in 19 deaths.
A special committee, comprising officials from the Ministries of Interior and Sports, has been established to implement measures that will allow the championship to resume without spectators. The decision is part of the efforts to ensure the safety of fans and maintain order during the matches, which will be played behind closed doors.
The suspension followed the deadly violence between supporters of Zamalek and law enforcement, which raised serious concerns about the safety of fans in Egyptian football. In response, the government decided to halt all matches to prevent further unrest.
While the official statement did not specify a date for the resumption of the league, it is understood that matches will be held without spectators once the mourning period concludes. The authorities are taking steps to ensure the safety of players, officials, and the general public as the championship returns to action.
