Egypt appoint Ali Maher as Hossam Hassan leaves national team post

The Egyptian Football Association has confirmed the departure of Hossam Hassan as manager of the Egypt national team and appointed Ali Maher as his successor.

Maher, who was manager of Ceramica Cleopatra, will take charge of the Pharaohs ahead of their next Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Malawi on 13 and 17 November.

FilGoal.com had reported that the Egyptian Football Association had decided to end Hassan’s tenure and replace him with Maher.

Hassan took over as Egypt manager in 2022. During his spell in charge, he led the team to fourth place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and guided them to the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

Egypt are in Group B of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying competition alongside Angola, South Sudan and Malawi.

The group leaders have four points from their opening two matches, level on points with Angola but ahead on goal difference. Malawi are third with three points, while South Sudan are bottom without a point.

Egypt began their campaign with a goalless draw against Angola in Cairo before recording a 5-0 victory away to South Sudan.
