Egyptian legend Ahmed Fathy, affectionately known as the “Joker,” has brought the curtain down on a remarkable football career that spanned over two decades.

Fathy, who celebrated his 40th birthday just shy of his retirement, was the last active member of Egypt’s celebrated AFCON-winning generation, leaving behind an indelible legacy.

Born in Benha, Egypt, Fathy’s journey in professional football began at Ismaily, where he quickly showcased his versatility and maturity, earning a move to Sheffield United in the Premier League.

Though his spell in England was brief, it allowed him to gain invaluable experience at the highest level of the sport.

But it was at Al Ahly, Egypt’s most decorated club, where he truly cemented his name as one of the greats.

With Al Ahly, Fathy collected an impressive array of trophies, including multiple Egyptian Premier League titles, CAF Champions League trophies, and numerous domestic cups.

Internationally, Fathy was a cornerstone of Egypt’s golden era, winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008, and 2010, all under the stewardship of his mentor, Hassan Shehata.

A reliable presence on the right flank, he could also comfortably slot in at center-back or left-back when needed, embodying the nickname “Joker” for his tactical flexibility.

Fathy’s international exploits extended to representing Egypt at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the 2012 London Olympics, and the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship.

His presence and leadership will be deeply missed on the pitch, but his legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of Egyptian footballers for years to come.
