Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has firmly denied reports suggesting that he has stepped down from his role following Nigeria’s recent 0-0 draw against Rwanda. Speculation arose after the stalemate, prompting the 59-year-old to set the record straight upon his return to Nigeria.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival from Rwanda, Eguavoen made it clear that he remains in charge of the national team.

“Whatever people are reading out there is not correct, I am still in charge,” he asserted.

Eguavoen, who also serves as the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), emphasized that his duties extend beyond his current position, and he is fully focused on leading the Super Eagles.

Eguavoen was called upon to temporarily take over the reins of the Nigerian national team after former candidate, German coach Bruno Labbadia, turned down the offer to lead the three-time African champions.

Since assuming the role, Eguavoen has guided the team through two crucial matches in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, securing a victory against Benin and a goalless draw with Rwanda.

Despite these results, rumors began circulating shortly after the match against Rwanda, with claims that Eguavoen had resigned from his position.

These claims, however, were swiftly dismissed by the coach.

“I only talked about sitting down with the hierarchy of the federation after these two games to discuss how we prosecute the next games,” Eguavoen clarified, explaining his intention to evaluate the team’s strategy with NFF officials rather than stepping down.

Eguavoen expressed his frustration with the misinformation circulating in the media, stressing the importance of unity and positive energy as the team prepares for future challenges.

“It’s quite unfortunate that people trigger what is not correct, and in the situation we’re in, we don’t need negative stories,” he added, calling for an end to speculation that could destabilize the team’s morale.

As the Super Eagles continue their AFCON 2025 qualification campaign, Eguavoen’s leadership remains a critical factor.

The coach, who has previously led Nigeria to success on the continental stage, is determined to guide the team through the upcoming challenges and ensure their qualification for the prestigious tournament.

With his clarification, Eguavoen hopes to put the rumors to rest and focus on the task ahead—preparing the Super Eagles for their upcoming matches.

The NFF has not yet made any official statement regarding the next steps, but all indications suggest that Eguavoen will remain at the helm for the foreseeable future as Nigeria seeks to secure their place in the AFCON 2025 tournament.
