Edouard Mendy shines as Saudi Pro League’s top goalkeeper in clean sheets

Senegalese international Edouard Mendy has had an impressive debut season in the Saudi Pro League, ending as the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets, alongside Yassine Bounou of Al-Hilal. The 32-year-old’s consistent performances have been a cornerstone of Al-Ahli’s strong defensive record this season.

In his first campaign with Al-Ahli, Mendy showcased his skills and resilience, helping the team secure a third-place finish in the league.

Despite a few minor errors, Mendy’s overall performance was robust, reflecting his experience from previous stints at Stade de Reims, Stade Rennais, and Chelsea.

Under the guidance of coach Matthias Jaissle, Al-Ahli conceded only 35 goals, ranking as the third-best defense in the league, tied with Al-Taawoun and trailing only Al-Hilal (23 goals) and Al-Ittihad (34 goals).

Mendy, who missed just one match (a 2-2 draw against Al-Ettifaq), conceded 33 goals in 33 appearances.

His individual statistics are impressive, especially when compared to Al-Hilal’s Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who conceded 20 goals.

Mendy’s ability to maintain clean sheets has been particularly noteworthy. He achieved 15 clean sheets throughout the season, matching the record of Bounou.

This feat places him ahead of other top goalkeepers in the league, including Mailson of Al-Taawoun (13 clean sheets) and Paulo Victor of Al-Ettifaq (12 clean sheets).

A significant part of Mendy’s success can be attributed to the solid defensive lineup in front of him, featuring internationals like Turkey’s Merih Demiral and Brazil’s Roger Ibañez.

Their collective effort fortified Al-Ahli’s defense, making them one of the most formidable backlines in the Saudi Pro League.

Mendy’s performance this season reaffirms his reputation as a top-tier goalkeeper and a valuable asset to any team.

As Al-Ahli look forward to building on their success, Mendy’s contributions will undoubtedly be a key factor in their future endeavors.
