Edouard Mendy has delivered an emotional and determined message as the Senegal national football team prepares for its upcoming friendly clash, emphasising unity as the team’s greatest strength during a challenging period.

Senegal will face the Gambia national football team on Tuesday at the Abdullah Wade Stadium, in a match that forms part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The encounter also marks the team’s first appearance on home soil since lifting the Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco.

Speaking at a press conference alongside head coach Pape Thiaw, Mendy highlighted the unwavering support of the Senegalese people while acknowledging the emotional toll of recent events.

He said, “We know that the Senegalese people always stand by us. Of course, the absence of the 18 fans who were with us hurts us, but we will do everything we can to bring them back to us as soon as possible.”

The goalkeeper, who plays for Al-Ahli Saudi FC, reflected on the unity shown during recent fixtures, adding, “What happened at the Stade de France clearly showed that when Senegal is united, we can move mountains.”

Senegalese football is currently navigating a complex moment, balancing the pride of continental success with uncertainty off the pitch. A legal dispute involving the Confederation of African Football and the Court of Arbitration for Sport continues over the legitimacy of the AFCON title.

Despite the ongoing controversy, the players recently celebrated their triumph with a symbolic gesture in front of fans during a friendly match against Peru national football team at the Stade de France.

Mendy also praised the connection between the team and its supporters, stating,

“The community has been amazing, and tomorrow here at home, we will also have this support. I discovered the beauty of our country during the World Cup tour, a people of high values who love their national team and their country.”

He concluded with a message of commitment ahead of the clash, saying, “Tomorrow, we will play for them (the fans of the Lions of Teranga), and in front of our Gambian brothers, we will do everything we can to achieve victory.”
