Eberechi Eze full of confidence ahead of Arsenal vs Sporting second leg

English-Nigerian forward Eberechi Eze has made it clear that Arsenal FC will approach their decisive UEFA Champions League clash against Sporting CP with confidence, not fear, as they aim to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Despite a challenging run of results, Eze insists the squad remains mentally strong ahead of the second leg.

Arsenal carry a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg, putting them within touching distance of qualification.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, he said: “We all know the situation we are in and the opportunity before us, and we know what is at stake. There is a tremendous amount of confidence and belief within the group and in our team, and it is a very special feeling to be a part of this.”

A Dream Within Reach

For Eze, the moment carries personal significance, having grown up dreaming of playing in Europe’s elite competition. Now, he finds himself on the brink of achieving something special with Arsenal.

He said, “The focus is on the opportunity we have to seize with both hands. These are definitely the moments you aspire to play in as a footballer; to take part in high-stakes matches in all competitions and win as much as possible. It’s a great time, I’m very excited, and I know the lads are too, and we will definitely give it our all.”

Confidence Driving Arsenal Forward

Eze highlighted the importance of belief within the squad, stressing that confidence—not arrogance—is key to success at this level.

“I think there was a certain level of confidence, not arrogance, but belief within that squad. For me, that’s the essence of football: to go out onto the pitch and believe that you’re the right person to decide. You’re part of that team, and that’s the mentality required. They had that, and it’s something we have now too, and it’s special to be a part of it. It’s really the thing that dreams are made of.”

Champions League Ambition Burns Bright

The Arsenal forward also spoke about the emotional connection players have with the competition, describing it as the pinnacle of club football.

He added, “The Champions League certainly has a special place; I grew up watching it on TV and dreaming of playing in this competition. To have it as a goal since I was young is very special, and it has actually happened, and I never take it lightly. To be in a position to win the tournament, and to have a real chance of doing so, is the most special thing, and I am grateful to God for that.”
