Dutch-Ivorian defender Nathan Ake targeted by Atletico Madrid for January loan
Atletico Madrid is reportedly lining up a significant move for Manchester City defender Nathan Aké. The Spanish giants are keen to bring the Netherlands international to La Liga during the upcoming January transfer window.
Aké has experienced a notable reduction in playing time at the Etihad Stadium this season. Intermediaries connected to Atletico are increasingly confident they can secure the versatile defender. They believe City is prepared to make the player available for the mid-season market.
Aké, whose father is originally from Côte d’Ivoire, has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under manager Pep Guardiola.
The Dutch-Ivorian star has managed limited appearances across all competitions this season. So far, Aké has been featured in only 12 matches for the Premier League side.
More tellingly, only four of those appearances have been full starts. This lack of consistent minutes has fueled speculation regarding his long-term future with the English club.
According to reports from El Desmarque, Atletico Madrid is formulating a creative financial package. They intend to propose a loan-to-buy arrangement to Manchester City next month.
This structure would allow the Spanish side to immediately reinforce their defense without a massive initial outlay. It would then commit them to a permanent purchase obligation later. Atletico’s defensive solidity has been a hallmark, and Aké’s versatility across the backline is highly valued by the club.
Despite the recent dip in game time, Aké remains under a long-term contract with the reigning Premier League champions. His current agreement runs until the summer of 2027.
