Dutch interest fails to sway PSV Eindhoven youngster Amir Bouhamdi

Amir Bouhamdi has chosen to represent Morocco at international level despite an approach from the Royal Dutch Football Association, which had tried to persuade the PSV Eindhoven youngster to play for the Netherlands in the coming years.

The 16-year-old prospect is eligible for both Morocco and the Netherlands and has attracted attention because of his development at PSV Eindhoven, a club widely recognised for its focus on identifying and nurturing young talent.

According to Moroccan website Hesport, the Dutch federation had taken a particular interest in Bouhamdi and moved early to establish contact with him. The aim was to convince the midfielder that his international future should lie with the Netherlands, where he was viewed as one of the young players who could contribute to the next generation of the national team.

However, Bouhamdi has made his preference clear. He has opted to represent Morocco rather than switch his international allegiance to the Netherlands.

Hesport reported that the player informed the Royal Moroccan Football Federation of his decision in recent days. That communication brings to an end the Dutch efforts to persuade him to wear the Netherlands shirt in the future.

Bouhamdi’s international decision comes as his club career continues to develop at PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch club recently extended his contract until the summer of 2031, a move that reflects the confidence he has earned from the club’s hierarchy and coaching staff.

The long-term agreement provides further evidence of PSV Eindhoven’s belief in the player’s potential. The club has retained him as he continues his progression through its youth structure and moves closer to consideration around the first-team squad.

Bouhamdi joined the PSV Eindhoven academy in 2017, aged nine. Since then, he has advanced through the club’s various age groups, steadily moving upwards as his development continued.

His progress has now brought him nearer to the senior set-up, while his decision to commit to Morocco gives the Moroccan national team a player it had been keen to retain. The choice also prevents the Netherlands from securing the services of a dual-national who had emerged from one of the country’s leading development systems.

For PSV Eindhoven, Bouhamdi remains part of a long-term project supported by a contract running through 2031. For Morocco, his commitment represents a significant step in securing the international future of an emerging player who has spent almost all of his footballing development in the Netherlands.
