Memphis Depay faces lengthy suspension

Dutch international of Ghanaian descent Memphis Depay is facing possible disciplinary action in Brazil after an unusual incident saw him use his mobile phone while on the substitutes’ bench during a match.

The Corinthians forward has been charged by the prosecutor of Brazil’s Superior Sports Court following his actions in Sunday’s clash against Flamengo.

The 32-year-old reportedly used his phone shortly after being substituted, prompting concerns over a breach of matchday regulations.

Depay has been charged under Article 258 of the Brazilian Sports Justice Code (CBJD), a rule that covers conduct deemed to violate discipline or sporting ethics. If found guilty, the Dutch international could face a fine and a suspension ranging from one to six matches.

The incident has drawn widespread attention due to its unusual nature, with players typically prohibited from using electronic devices during matches unless authorized.

However, Depay has defended his actions, insisting there was no misconduct involved. The former Netherlands national football team star explained that he briefly used his phone to communicate with his national team’s medical staff regarding an injury concern, rather than for personal or inappropriate reasons.

The forward is now awaiting a disciplinary hearing, which is expected to take place in the coming days. The outcome will determine whether the explanation is accepted or if sanctions will be imposed.

So far this season, Depay has made 12 appearances for Corinthians, registering one goal and one assist. Despite his limited contributions on the pitch, the off-field controversy has now placed him firmly in the spotlight as he awaits a verdict on the matter.
