Liverpool are set to complete the signing of Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong this summer, with the Dutch-Ghanaian full-back poised to take on a squad number that has not been used at Anfield for over a decade.
Frimpong, who has Ghanaian heritage through his parents, is set to join the Premier League champions after Liverpool activated his £29.5 million release clause.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to join Real Madrid once his contract expires, Frimpong is being lined up as the long-term replacement for the England international.
The 24-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Reds and is currently undergoing his medical.
However, finding a squad number for the pacey defender has been a challenge. With the number 2 shirt worn by Joe Gomez and the numbers 3, 4, and 5 also occupied, Frimpong is set to take the number 30 shirt – a number that has not been seen at Liverpool in nearly 10 years.
The last player to wear the number 30 at Anfield was Spanish midfielder Suso, who left the club in 2015 after making just 21 first-team appearances.
Other players who have worn the number include Dutch winger Boudewijn Zenden, Icelandic forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason, and French defender Djimi Traore, whose inconsistent performances made the number a rare sight at the club in recent years.
Liverpool, who have already secured the Premier League title, will face Brighton on Monday night as they look to cap off their season on a high.
