Van der Vaart fires shot at Morocco over player international choices
Dutch football icon Rafael van der Vaart has ignited a wave of debate after making controversial comments about players who choose to represent Morocco over the Netherlands.
Speaking during an appearance on the Dutch football program Studio Voetbal, and as reported by Voetbalzone, Van der Vaart questioned the level of players opting to play for Morocco instead of the Netherlands, making remarks that quickly drew attention across the football world.
“I don’t want to be rude, but all the Moroccans who aren’t performing well here go play for Morocco,” he stated, in comments that many have since described as dismissive and controversial.
He went on to single out Hakim Ziyech as an exception, expressing regret that the former AFC Ajax playmaker did not remain with the Dutch setup. Van der Vaart praised Ziyech’s quality, suggesting he could have played a significant role for the Netherlands at international level.
However, his broader assessment of Morocco’s national team sparked even greater debate. Van der Vaart downplayed the likelihood of the Netherlands facing any serious challenge from Morocco in major tournaments, asserting that the North African side does not pose a significant threat.
“If you want to win the tournament, we as the Netherlands, then you don’t have to worry about Morocco,” he added.
The comments have fueled a familiar narrative surrounding Morocco’s growing pool of dual-nationality talent, as the country continues to attract players with Moroccan heritage from across Europe. In recent years, the Morocco national football team has emerged as a competitive force on the global stage, challenging traditional powerhouses and earning respect through performances and results.
While Van der Vaart’s remarks reflect a personal opinion, they also highlight the ongoing debate around player allegiance, identity, and the evolving landscape of international football. For Morocco, such criticism may only serve as added motivation as they continue to build a team capable of competing at the highest level and silencing doubters on the pitch.
