Durban City complete signing of Mali left-back Alou Doumbia

Durban City have completed the signing of Mali left-back Alou Doumbia from Djoliba ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 23-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with the Nedbank Cup champions, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by a further year.

Doumbia had been identified as a target by Durban City for more than 12 months before the move was finally concluded. He arrives from Djoliba, where he established himself as an important player for the Mali giants.

His arrival strengthens a position that required attention after Durban City were unable to retain Terrence Mashego for the coming campaign. Mashego had been on loan at the club from Mamelodi Sundowns but has moved to Stellenbosch for the new season.

Doumbia is expected to add quality and depth to a Durban City squad led by new head coach Khalil Ben Youssef. The team will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup this season, increasing the demands on the squad as they prepare for domestic and continental football.

The signing is the latest move in an active transfer window for Durban City, who are continuing to reshape their squad before the start of the new campaign.

Kyle Jurgens has joined from Stellenbosch, while Tashreeq Morris, Bandile Shandu, Gaston Sirino and Gomolemo Khoto have all been acquired as free agents. Seth Green has also been signed by the club.

Doumbia’s move gives Ben Youssef another option at left-back and follows a lengthy period of interest from Durban City. The club had been monitoring the defender for more than a year before securing his services from Djoliba.

His previous role at the Mali club, where he became a key figure, was a major factor in Durban City’s decision to pursue the transfer. The player will now begin preparations with his new team ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The deal also comes as Durban City prepare for a campaign that will include the CAF Confederation Cup, alongside their domestic commitments in the Betway Premiership. The club’s recruitment activity has included both permanent additions and free-agent signings as they build a squad capable of handling the increased schedule.

Doumbia’s contract includes the possibility of a further year beyond its initial two-year term, giving Durban City the option to retain him for longer if the arrangement proves successful.

The move completes the club’s search for a replacement following Mashego’s departure to Stellenbosch and represents another significant addition to the squad that won the Nedbank Cup.
