Orlando Pirates have received backing from Durban City manager Gavin Hunt to win the 2025/26 South African Premiership title at the expense of Mamelodi Sundowns.

His comment stem from the sides 2-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates in the Premiership clash at the weekend. Hunt’s belief in Pirates overcoming defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns is buoyed by the quality signings made in the summer.

“I don’t really care, but if you look at the Pirates squad, they’ve got huge impact players, which make a difference,” Hunt said after the game at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Hunt credited the Sea Robbers bench and also mentioned that their loss in the CAF Champions League is an advantage as playing on the continent can take its toll on the team.

“If you look at their squad, what they bring in on off the bench and them being out of Africa, it’s a big plus for them,” he said.

“Africa, my friends, you’ve got no idea unless you’ve been there. So, not to play in Africa, I think it’s a big plus for them.

Orlando pirates are currently on top of the South African Premiership table, amassing 28 points, three points ahead of Sundowns after 12 matches into the campaign.
