Kevin Pedro earns DRC call up for AFCON qualifiers

Kevin Pedro has received his first call up to the Democratic Republic of Congo national team ahead of their upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifying matches.

The Saint Étienne right back is among the more unexpected selections for the Leopards, with his inclusion coming after an impressive rise through the French club’s academy and into its first team.

Pedro is a product of the Saint Étienne youth system and joined the senior squad in January 2026. His progress quickly convinced the club to hand him his first professional contract at the age of 20.

His development has continued into the current season. Pedro was included in Saint Étienne’s pre season squad and has since established himself as an important member of the Ligue 2 side.

The right back has featured in every match so far this season, underlining the trust he has earned within the team.

His performances at club level have now opened the door to international football with the DRC.

Pedro previously represented France at youth level, progressing through the country’s age group teams. He has made around five appearances for the French under 16 and under 19 sides.

The switch to the Leopards represents a new stage in his career and gives the young defender an opportunity to experience senior international football.

Pedro arrives in the DRC squad with the expectation of learning, but he could also have an opportunity to demonstrate his qualities if he is called upon during the upcoming matches.

His selection adds a youthful option to the Leopards’ defensive group as the country continues its campaign in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The DRC will begin this period of international football with a home match against Equatorial Guinea in Kinshasa on Thursday, 24 September.

They will then travel to Zimbabwe for another fixture on Monday, 28 September.

The Leopards will continue their qualifying schedule in October with two matches against Uganda. The first will take place on Friday, 2 October, followed by another meeting on Monday, 5 October, with both matches scheduled to be played in South Africa.

For Pedro, the upcoming fixtures offer the first opportunity to become part of the DRC senior setup after his progression through the French youth teams.

His rise at Saint Étienne has earned him recognition at international level, and the 2027 AFCON qualifiers now provide the 20 year old with a chance to begin a new chapter with the Leopards.

Whether he starts or waits for his opportunity from the bench, Pedro’s inclusion reflects the progress he has made since breaking into the Saint Étienne first team earlier this year.
