Sébastien Desabre praises players, staff and fans after DR Congo’s World Cup triumph
The Democratic Republic of Congo has qualified for the 2026 World Cup finals after defeating Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff, ending a 52-year absence from football’s showpiece tournament.
Speaking to journalists after the match, DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre expressed pride in the achievement, which he attributed to a collective effort from players, staff, fans, and government support.
“It is the end of a long drought. I am proud of my players, proud of my staff. The whole world needs to understand that Congo has good players, resilient players.
This victory is for the Congolese people, for the fans who support us,” Desabre said.
The Leopards’ squad, including Cédric Bakambu, Chancel Mbemba, Theo Bongonda, and Axel Tuanzebe, played a pivotal role in securing the historic qualification.
Their performance was celebrated by thousands of fans, both in the stadium and across the country, highlighting the nation’s enduring passion for football.
Desabre also praised the government’s involvement, noting the role of authorities in supporting the team’s journey. “I am proud to see the Congolese people celebrating. I am also proud of the government’s support and all the efforts made.
It is a source of pride, first and foremost for the Congolese people, because we know we have a huge following,” he added.
The Leopards’ return to the World Cup finals marks a landmark moment in DR Congo’s football history and provides a platform for the country’s players to showcase their talent on the global stage.
For Desabre, the qualification is both a personal and national triumph, symbolizing resilience and collective achievement.
