Robert Kidiaba to Retire from International Football After CAN 2015
Veteran goalkeeper Robert Kidiaba has officially announced that the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will mark the end of his international career with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“This will be my last competition with the national team,” the 38-year-old icon told TP Mazembe’s official website. “2015 is the year I say goodbye. This is a great opportunity not to be missed.”
Kidiaba, famous both for his incredible saves and his trademark bum-shuffle goal celebration, is determined to end on a high. Drawn in Group B, the Leopards will face Cape Verde, Zambia, and Tunisia—a group Kidiaba sees as a real challenge.
“No team should be underestimated. Cape Verde has proven to be very well-organized and deserves respect. As the oldest member of this squad, I want to lead my country to the final,” he said.
The match against Zambia holds special meaning for Kidiaba and Congolese fans, as it will see him go head-to-head with his TP Mazembe teammates Rainford Kalaba and Given Singuluma.
Fans across Africa and the world will no doubt be watching closely—not just for his performances, but for one last glimpse of his legendary goal celebration.
