DR Congo revive CHAN 2024 campaign with commanding victory over Zambia

DR Congo reignited their CHAN 2024 ambitions with a convincing 2-0 win over Zambia on Thursday at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Following a narrow 1-0 defeat to hosts Kenya in their opening Group Stage encounter, the Leopards were under pressure to deliver a response. They rose to the occasion with a solid performance that not only kept their tournament hopes alive but also highlighted their ability to adapt under pressure.

The first half offered few opportunities, with both sides struggling to break through defensively organized setups.

Despite the high stakes, neither team managed to create clear-cut chances before the break. DR Congo, however, emerged from the dressing room with renewed intent.

The breakthrough came in the 51st minute. A long throw-in from the left side found Jephté Kitambala, who calmly laid it back for Ibrahim Matobo.

The midfielder unleashed a well-placed strike at the near post, leaving the Zambian goalkeeper with no chance. The goal energized the Congolese side, who immediately looked more composed and confident in their approach.

As Zambia pushed forward in search of an equaliser, gaps began to appear in their defence. DR Congo took full advantage in the 71st minute.

A quick and incisive counterattack saw substitute Malanga Horso Mwaku—just minutes after entering the pitch—finish off a precise pass from Oscar Kabwit to double the lead. The forward’s composure in front of goal sealed the result and provided the Leopards with the breathing space they needed.

With this crucial win, DR Congo have positioned themselves back in the running for a spot in the quarter-finals. They will now turn their focus to their next match against Angola on August 14, knowing that another victory could secure their progression from what is considered one of the toughest groups in the tournament.

For Zambia, the defeat marks a disappointing start to their CHAN 2024 journey. Having been exempt from the opening round, the Chipolopolo now face a must-win clash against Angola on Sunday, August 10, if they are to keep their hopes alive.

While the group remains wide open, DR Congo’s performance has reignited belief within the squad and their supporters. With three crucial points and renewed momentum, the Leopards have shown they are far from finished in this competition.
