Britt Assombalonga Weighs International Future: DR Congo or England?
Britt Assombalonga is facing a key decision in his footballing career—whether to represent Democratic Republic of Congo or England at international level.
Born in Kinshasa, Assombalonga is eligible to play for the Leopards through birth and family heritage, as his father Fedor Assombalonga was himself a Congolese international. However, having grown up in the UK and holding British nationality, the Nottingham Forest striker also qualifies to represent England.
Speaking to the BBC, Forest manager Stuart Pearce acknowledged the player’s indecision:
“At the moment, I don’t see him leaving in January (for the AFCON), but who knows? I think he said in Congo that he prefers not to close any doors.”
Pearce made it clear he won’t pressure Assombalonga:
“The choice is his. I’ve been very proud to represent my country, so I would never want to influence a player to play or not play for a country. We will support him whatever his decision.”
The 22-year-old forward has been in fine form, scoring 12 goals in the Championship this season, and is seen as a valuable prospect by both nations.
With AFCON 2015 on the horizon, DR Congo would likely welcome his decision to commit. But for now, Assombalonga is staying focused on club duties, while keeping both doors open.
