DR Congo and Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa says, regular messages from club legend Alan Shearer have given him an extra lift as he settles into life at St James’ Park. Now fully fit and among the goals, the forward admits the encouragement from one of the club’s greatest-ever players has made his journey with the Magpies even more special.
Wissa revealed he was stunned the first time Shearer reached out after his move to Newcastle. “I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I thought it must be someone else’s phone.” The striker added that a message from Shearer before the recent win over Fulham gave him a significant boost, knowing the former England captain was watching. “He’s a huge legend,” Wissa said, “so to score after that meant a lot to me.”
The connection with Newcastle’s past does not stop there. Wissa also shared that former strikers Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba, heroes of the club’s memorable recent history, played a major role in his affection for the club.
Cisse sent him a message of support, while Wissa admitted it was watching Cisse and Ba that made him fall in love with Newcastle in the first place. “I only wanted to come here,” he said. “It was only ever Newcastle.”
