DR Congo adjust World Cup plans amid Ebola concerns

The Democratic Republic of Congo and FIFA have held discussions over health precautions linked to the Ebola outbreak as the Leopards continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With the tournament approaching, concerns surrounding the health situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo prompted a strategic meeting between officials from the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) and representatives from world football’s governing body.

The videoconference, organised on May 23, 2026, at the initiative of FECOFA president Veron Mosengo Omba, focused on the impact of the Ebola outbreak on the national team, coaching staff and supporters planning to travel to the United States for the competition.

During the discussions, FECOFA assured FIFA that measures had already been implemented to protect players and staff from any potential risk of infection.

The federation also confirmed that it is complying with all health protocols required by the United States authorities ahead of the World Cup.

FECOFA further explained that most of the players selected for the tournament are based in Europe, reducing concerns regarding direct exposure to the virus.

As part of the preventive measures, the federation has adjusted the team’s original preparation schedule.

The Leopards had initially planned to hold part of their training camp in Kinshasa before travelling to Belgium, but the Congolese capital has now been removed from the programme in response to updated American health requirements.

The technical staff has also adapted to the new measures. FECOFA stated that members of the coaching team travelling from Kinshasa departed the country on May 20, 2026, ensuring they would spend more than 21 days in Europe before entering the United States.

Following the meeting, FECOFA and FIFA concluded that the players and technical staff satisfy the conditions required to participate in the competition without disruption.

Both organisations subsequently encouraged the national team to continue preparations normally ahead of the tournament.

The issue of supporters was also raised during the discussions. Several Congolese fans who had already purchased tickets for World Cup matches reportedly encountered difficulties obtaining visas due to new administrative restrictions introduced by the United States.

In response, FECOFA president Veron Mosengo Omba requested FIFA’s assistance in exploring possible reimbursement solutions for affected supporters. FIFA indicated that it would review the proposal.

DR Congo have been placed in Group K for the 2026 World Cup, where they are scheduled to face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan during the group stage of the competition.
