The second round of matches in Group C at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations delivered decisive outcomes on Monday, as both the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ghana secured crucial victories to move top of the standings.
In the day’s opening fixture, DR Congo overcame an early setback to defeat the Central African Republic 3-1 at the New Suez Stadium.
Raphaël Nzabakomada Yakoma gave the Central African side an unexpected lead in the 10th minute, capitalising on a rebound after the Congolese goalkeeper’s initial save.
However, DR Congo gradually gained control of the match and equalised just before half-time through Noah Makanza, who reacted quickest to a poorly cleared penalty.
The momentum remained with the Congolese after the break, with Makanza once again finding the net to put his side ahead in the 50th minute.
Samuel Ntanda then sealed the win in the 59th minute, heading in a pinpoint cross from Messy Manitu to ensure a comeback victory.
Later in the evening, Ghana edged Senegal 1-0 in a tightly contested affair.
The match was evenly balanced throughout, but Ghana made the breakthrough in the second half with a swift counterattack that left the Senegalese defence exposed.
Despite late pressure from Senegal, the Black Satellites managed to hold on for a vital three points.
The results mean DR Congo and Ghana now lead Group C with four points each, separated only by goal difference.
Senegal and the Central African Republic are tied at one point apiece and face a must-win scenario in their final group matches to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.
Group C standings after two rounds:
- DR Congo U20 – 4 points
- Ghana U20 – 4 points
- Senegal U20 – 1 point
- Central African Republic U20 – 1 point
The final round of group matches promises high drama, with DR Congo needing just a draw against Ghana to guarantee a quarter-final berth, while Senegal and the Central African Republic will face off in a battle for survival.
