DPR Korea lead the way as the Women’s U20 World Cup celebrates its 10th edition

The Women’s U20 World Cup is being staged for the 10th time this year, with DPR Korea holding the record for the most titles.

DPR Korea are also the reigning champions, having won the past two editions. Their latest successes followed earlier triumphs in 2008, when the competition was first held, and in 2016.

The tournament began as a biennial event before moving to an annual schedule. Its early editions were dominated by Asian teams, with DPR Korea and Korea Republic taking turns at the top of the competition.

Only France and Spain, from outside Asia, have won the Women’s U20 World Cup. Spain have also been among the most consistent teams, finishing as runners-up several times and collecting three third-place finishes.

The complete roll of honour is as follows:

Edition 1 Champions: DPR Korea Runners-up: United States Third place: Germany

Edition 2 Champions: Korea Republic Runners-up: Japan Third place: Spain

Edition 3 Champions: France Runners-up: DPR Korea Third place: Ghana

Edition 4 Champions: Japan Runners-up: Spain Third place: Italy

Edition 5 Champions: DPR Korea Runners-up: Japan Third place: Spain

Edition 7 Champions: Spain Runners-up: Colombia Third place: Brazil

Edition 8 Champions: DPR Korea Runners-up: Spain Third place: United States

Edition 9 Champions: DPR Korea Runners-up: Netherlands Third place: Spain

DPR Korea’s four titles make them the most successful nation in the competition’s history. Spain are next among the teams listed, with two championships, while Korea Republic, France and Japan have each won once.
