Doue strike earns PSG European Super Cup glory against Aston Villa
Paris Saint-Germain lifted the European Super Cup on Wednesday after Desire Doue’s second-half goal secured a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa. The French side were made to work for the trophy after Aston Villa fought back to level before half-time.
PSG started with authority and quickly established control of the match. Their early pressure produced several attacking opportunities, although Aston Villa managed to stay in contention during the opening stages.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 20th minute. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finished off Paris’s sustained spell of pressure to put the European champions in front and reward their positive start.
Aston Villa responded before the interval and succeeded in restoring parity on the stroke of half-time. Brian Madjo scored in the 45th minute, sending the two teams into the dressing rooms level at 1-1.
The equaliser gave Aston Villa renewed encouragement, but PSG returned after the break with the initiative once again. Paris continued to push forward in search of a second goal and were rewarded in the 62nd minute.
Doue restored PSG’s advantage with the match’s decisive goal, putting the French club back in front and placing them in a strong position to claim the trophy.
Aston Villa then attempted to find another equaliser and bring the contest back level. However, PSG’s defence resisted the pressure during the closing stages, protecting their lead until the final whistle.
The 2-1 success adds the European Super Cup to PSG’s honours list, only a few weeks after the club won the Champions League.
Paris had taken control early, lost their advantage shortly before the interval and then regained it through Doue after the restart. Aston Villa’s efforts to respond were ultimately unsuccessful as PSG held on to complete the victory.
The result gives PSG another European trophy in a short period, following their Champions League triumph. Kvaratskhelia’s first-half opener and Doue’s winner proved enough to overcome Madjo’s equaliser and deliver the Super Cup to the Parisian side.
