Borussia Dortmund surrendered a two-goal lead in the closing stages as Werder Bremen fought back to earn a 2-2 draw in the opening match of the Bundesliga’s fifth round on Friday.
Dortmund appeared set to claim victory after Daniel Svensson put them ahead in the 80th minute, with Nico Schlotterbeck doubling their advantage five minutes later.
But Werder Bremen began a dramatic late comeback when Ludovit Reis pulled a goal back in the 88th minute. Niclas Fullkrug then completed the turnaround in the second minute of added time to secure a point for the visitors.
The result leaves Dortmund top of the table on 13 points from five matches, although their lead may disappear on Saturday. Bayern Munich, who have 10 points from four games, will move level with them if they beat Augsburg.
Bayern Munich would take first place on goal difference if they win, with their advantage standing at +12 before the current round of fixtures compared with Dortmund’s +7. Neither figure changed after Dortmund’s draw.
Freiburg, third in the standings, also have 10 points from four matches and could join Dortmund and Bayern Munich on the same total if they defeat Schalke on Sunday.
Werder Bremen moved up to fourth place with eight points.
Dortmund dominated possession against Bremen, controlling 69% of the match, and registered 18 shots, 11 of which were on target. However, their attacking efforts were repeatedly frustrated by an outstanding display from goalkeeper Karl Hein.
The hosts looked to have done enough after Svensson’s opener and Schlotterbeck’s finish gave them a commanding advantage with only five minutes remaining. Bremen’s response ensured Dortmund were unable to convert their control and chances into a fourth league win.
The draw also opened the possibility of a change at the top of the table after just five rounds, with Bayern Munich able to capitalise on Dortmund’s late collapse when they face Augsburg on Saturday.
