Cédric Evina Dreams of Donning the Indomitable Lions Jersey
As the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off, Cédric Evina has his heart set on representing Cameroon. The Doncaster Rovers left-back, born to Cameroonian parents, has declared his full commitment to the Indomitable Lions should the opportunity arise.
“I’ve chosen, and it will definitely be Cameroon from now on if I’m selected,” Evina told France Football. “It’s a choice I made last year. I’m originally from there thanks to both my parents—my dad is from Douala and my mom is from Yaoundé.”
Though he hasn’t been back in a decade, Evina cherishes his childhood memories of Cameroon and is planning a visit in May or June with his father. “It was really hot compared to England,” he joked. “But it was a great experience. I still have uncles and cousins there.”
Despite his desire, Evina has yet to receive any official contact from the Cameroonian Football Federation. “I think I can bring something extra to the team, even though I haven’t had any contact yet. I’m waiting. It’s not up to me,” he added with a laugh.
The 23-year-old also revealed a conversation with South Africa’s captain, Dean Furman, who was surprised by Evina’s absence from the national setup. “He wondered how it was that I wasn’t chosen. I didn’t really know what to say.”
For now, Evina continues to wait patiently, but the pride and passion he feels for Cameroon are unmistakable: “It would mean the world to my family. My father would be the happiest man in the world—he would be very proud.”
