Djibril Sidibé was sent off just 43 seconds into his Le Mans debut against Rennes, making the former France international’s first appearance for the club one of the shortest and most dramatic substitute appearances in Ligue 1.

The 2018 World Cup winner had begun the match on the bench after not featuring in Le Mans’ opening fixture against Brest.

He was introduced in the 68th minute, replacing Lucas Calodat, but his first appearance for the club ended almost immediately.

Sidibé was shown a straight red card by the referee following a studs-up challenge on Estéban Lepaul.

Sidibé’s challenge on Lepaul resulted in the referee producing a red card after only 43 seconds of playing time.

The former France defender therefore spent less than a minute on the pitch before being dismissed.

For a player making his first appearance for a new club, it was an extraordinary way to begin his time at Le Mans.

Opta highlights rare Ligue 1 record

According to Opta, the dismissal was unprecedented in the statistic covering substitutes over the previous 20 years.

No player coming off the bench had been sent off as quickly in Ligue 1 during that period.

The previous fastest dismissal recorded by Opta belonged to Benjamin Mendy.

Mendy was shown a red card 47 seconds after entering the pitch against Toulouse in 2015.

Yohan Cabaye also appears among the quickest substitute dismissals, having remained on the field for only 52 seconds before being sent off.

Sidibé’s 43-second appearance therefore moved him ahead of both players in the record.

An unwanted milestone for the 2018 World Cup winner

Sidibé arrived at Le Mans carrying considerable experience, including his role in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph.

That background made his debut for the club particularly notable, although not for the reasons he would have wanted.

Rather than helping Le Mans through the closing stages of the match, he was forced to watch from the sidelines after his early dismissal.

The incident also means his first competitive appearance for Le Mans will be remembered for an unusual statistic.

A debut to forget

Sidibé had been introduced with just over 20 minutes remaining, but his contribution was limited to a matter of seconds.

The referee’s decision following the challenge on Lepaul meant the defender could not continue, bringing his debut to an abrupt end.

Opta’s figures underline just how unusual the incident was.

Over the previous two decades, Mendy’s 47-second dismissal against Toulouse had stood as the quickest red card for a player coming on as a substitute in Ligue 1.

Cabaye’s 52-second dismissal was another notable example.

Sidibé has now surpassed both records after receiving his red card only 43 seconds after entering the game.

For the Le Mans defender, what should have been the beginning of a new chapter has instead produced an unwanted place in Ligue 1 history.

His debut will therefore be remembered not for a long contribution on the pitch, but for one of the fastest dismissals recorded in the competition.
