Cassius Cissé, the 18-year-old son of former French football star Djibril Cissé, has officially made his professional debut, marking the beginning of his own footballing journey. Eligible to represent five different national teams, Cassius has a range of choices as he begins to navigate the early stages of his career.
On Tuesday, the young Cissé took his first steps in professional football with Notts County FC, a League Two club in England’s fourth division.
He came on as a substitute during the final seven minutes of his team’s EFL Trophy match against Northampton, which ended in a 2-0 defeat.
Despite the brief appearance, Cassius managed to touch the ball 10 times, complete 7 out of 8 passes, and win one of two duels.
Though his primary position on the field is yet to be fully determined, Cassius is already drawing attention not just for his football skills but also for his rich heritage, which grants him eligibility to represent five different nations on the international stage.
His father, Djibril Cissé, who earned 41 caps for the French national team and was part of the legendary Liverpool squad that won the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul, has spoken about the wide range of options available to his son.
“He (Cassius) has several nationalities,” Djibril Cissé explained in an interview with Ivorian media outlet *Afrique sur 7*, later quoted by L’Équipe.
“His mother is Welsh, he was born in England, and I am French of Ivorian origin. His grandfather, Mangué Cissé, is Guinean. He really has a range of choices.
He will choose the national team that suits him.”
Cassius is eligible to play for France, England, Wales, Ivory Coast, and Guinea, each offering a unique path for his future in international football.
The diversity of his options reflects the global nature of his background, with ties to Europe and Africa. As his career develops, both fans and football associations will be keen to see which national team he ultimately commits to.
For now, however, Cassius Cissé’s focus remains on establishing himself at Notts County and building his reputation on the pitch.
His debut marks just the beginning of what could be an exciting career, and as the son of one of France’s former football icons, expectations are high.
While he has yet to appear on Transfermarkt, Cassius Cissé’s first steps in professional football signal the start of a promising journey, with the added intrigue of an international decision that could shape his career in the years to come.
