Togo Prepares for Challenging AFCON Qualifier Against Djibouti
Togo will face Djibouti on Friday, September 4, 2015, in their second match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers for Gabon 2017. With the Hawks aiming to secure a vital result, coach Tom Saintfiet is taking nothing for granted, stressing that Djibouti, despite their heavy 8-1 defeat to Tunisia in the opening round, should not be underestimated.
Speaking to the official website of the Togolese Football Federation, the Belgian coach emphasized the unpredictability of Djibouti’s team. “The match against Djibouti is not an easy one. The 8-1 defeat conceded to Tunisia on the first day in no way reflects the quality of the Djiboutians’ play. They are better than what we think of them,” Saintfiet said, signaling that his team will not be complacent heading into the encounter.
The weather conditions in Djibouti also pose a potential challenge for Togo, with temperatures expected to reach between 35 and 40°C. Saintfiet acknowledged the difficulties this could cause, particularly for players accustomed to cooler European climates. “We’ll be playing in intense heat, if I’m to believe what I’ve learned. The temperature will be between 35 and 40°C. For our players coming from European leagues, these aren’t ideal conditions. That’s why I’m asking for a lot of concentration,” he added.
Togo currently sits second in Group A following their 2-1 win over Liberia on Matchday 1. Tunisia leads the group after their commanding victory over Djibouti. Saintfiet’s side will be hoping for another three points to strengthen their qualification hopes as they push towards Gabon 2017.
