Djibouti Football Federation seeks new president after Souleiman Waberi ousted
The Djibouti Football Federation (FDF) is seeking a new president after member clubs voted to remove long-serving chief Souleiman Hassan Waberi and his executive committee.
Waberi, a close ally of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, was removed from the federation’s headquarters by police following the vote that ended his tenure.
The dramatic leadership change has plunged Djibouti football into a period of transition, with the FDF’s interim leadership keen to oversee a swift succession process.
Waberi had been a prominent figure in African football administration during his time at the helm of the FDF and also held positions within the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
His removal follows growing pressure from member clubs, who ultimately moved to replace him and his executive committee.
The interim leadership is now expected to focus on restoring stability within the federation and organising the process for the election of a new president.
Officials are keen to avoid a prolonged period of uncertainty that could further disrupt the administration of football in Djibouti.
The leadership change also comes at a sensitive time for African football, with national associations facing increasing scrutiny over governance and the management of the sport.
The FDF has yet to announce a definitive timetable for the election of Waberi’s successor.
