Djamel Belmadi, with a contract extending until 2018, has been appointed as the coach of the Qatar national football team, as announced by officials of the Emirate federation on Sunday.
The former Algerian international’s primary objective is to guide Qatar to qualification for the 2018 World Cup and the upcoming Asian Cup in Australia, while also ensuring the nation’s competitive edge in the 22nd edition of the Gulf Cup.
Although this marks Belmadi’s debut as a national team coach, he brings valuable experience from his previous tenure with the Lekhwiya club. During his time there, he secured the Qatar championship title twice, in 2011 and 2012.
In response to his appointment, Belmadi has expressed his commitment to fulfilling the objectives outlined by the Qatar Federation, beginning with a strong showing in the Gulf Cup, as reported by AFP.
Qatar, set to host the 2022 World Cup, aims to bolster its footballing stature under Belmadi’s leadership.
