Diomande’s rise puts Vinicius Junior’s Real Madrid role under scrutiny after El Clasico

Vinicius Junior’s position at Real Madrid is facing renewed scrutiny after Yan Diomande used the Brazilian’s suspension to make a strong claim for a regular place in Jose Mourinho’s team.

Vinicius missed the latest El Clasico through suspension as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou. The four-match ban gave Diomande an opportunity, and the Ivory Coast international took it by impressing in Sunday’s meeting with Real Madrid’s major rivals.

His performance has shifted the discussion beyond Vinicius’ absence. Attention is now turning to where the Brazil forward will fit into Mourinho’s plans when he becomes available again, particularly as a number of emerging players compete for places in the starting line-up.

The question carries added weight because of what happened in last season’s first La Liga Clasico. Vinicius was the focus of attention despite Real Madrid winning 2-1 after he reacted angrily to being substituted by Xabi Alonso.

Alonso replaced him in the 72nd minute, sending on Rodrygo Goes. Vinicius showed his frustration by walking towards the dressing rooms before quickly returning to take a place on the substitutes’ bench.

That incident was followed by a period of tension between Alonso and Vinicius. The disagreement ended with the Spanish manager leaving his position, while Vinicius’ form also declined. Real Madrid subsequently finished the campaign without a trophy for the second consecutive season.

The current situation has revived memories of that episode, with Diomande’s recent displays creating a direct challenge to Vinicius’ status. Mourinho’s decisions in the Champions League have also added to the uncertainty.

Although Vinicius has been suspended in La Liga and therefore did not require a rest from domestic fixtures, Mourinho substituted him in each of Real Madrid’s last two Champions League matches.

He was withdrawn in the 59th minute against Roma and substituted again in the 70th minute during the match against Leipzig. Those decisions have prompted questions over whether Mourinho sees Vinicius occupying a different role from the one he has held in previous seasons.

While last season’s Clasico became a defining moment in Vinicius’ campaign, this year’s meeting could have different consequences for the Brazil international’s longer-term future at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The fixture information accompanying the report lists Barcelona in La Liga on 31 October 2026. It also lists Deportivo Alaves against Racing Santander in La Liga on 01 November 2026, alongside Real Madrid.

Vinicius must now wait to discover whether he returns directly to Mourinho’s starting line-up or whether Diomande’s emergence has changed the contest for his position. The coming weeks will show whether the Brazilian can re-establish himself as first choice or faces a more difficult phase at Real Madrid.
