Diomande’s first Real Madrid start highlights Guler’s growing advantage
Yan Diomande’s first start for Real Madrid did little to strengthen his claim for a regular place in the team, with Arda Guler’s impact from the bench instead highlighting the gap between the two young players.
The Ivory Coast international was handed his first start by Jose Mourinho in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano, but struggled to impose himself on the game from the right wing.
Diomande is more comfortable operating from the left, and his unfamiliar position appeared to limit his influence as Real Madrid dominated proceedings without getting much from their record signing.
The 140 million-euro arrival from Leipzig had been used sparingly since joining the Spanish giants, making the Rayo fixture a significant opportunity to demonstrate why the club invested so heavily in his potential.
However, the performance offered little to suggest that he is ready to displace the players currently ahead of him.
Diomande fails to make his mark
Diomande was not completely ineffective, but his overall contribution was limited during his 71 minutes on the pitch.
His brightest moment came when he exploded down the flank, beating two opponents with his pace before cutting inside and firing his effort well over the crossbar.
He also worked hard defensively and showed flashes of the athleticism that made him such an attractive prospect at Leipzig.
Beyond those moments, however, the 22-year-old struggled to influence the contest consistently.
Marca rated him 5/10, the lowest score given to any of Real Madrid’s starting players, and questioned whether his display matched the expectations attached to his record transfer.
“Real Madrid’s most expensive player in history has to offer more than two good bursts down the wing.”
AS was similarly critical, pointing to the caution in Diomande’s performance as another area he must improve.
The pressure surrounding the youngster is understandable. His rapid rise at Leipzig convinced Real Madrid to spend a club-record fee on him, but that investment has also created enormous expectations.
Guler changes the game
Diomande’s situation became even more difficult when Guler replaced him in the 71st minute.
The Turkey international immediately injected greater purpose into Real Madrid’s attack, playing with confidence and freedom while making better use of his vision and left foot.
Guler provided an assist and quickly became one of the most influential players after entering the game, strengthening the argument that he currently deserves to be ahead of Diomande in Mourinho’s plans.
Antonio Romero captured the current pecking order on Cadena SER with a blunt assessment:
“Guler is the starter today.”
The contrast between the two was difficult to ignore.
While Diomande appeared hesitant and somewhat constrained by his role on the right, Guler attacked the game with personality and initiative.
Pressure grows on record signing
Diomande’s ability is not being questioned, but Real Madrid’s enormous investment means patience will inevitably be tested against immediate expectations.
The youngster has gone from being an emerging talent at Leipzig to the most expensive player in Real Madrid’s history within a matter of months.
That transition comes with significant pressure, particularly when competition for places is fierce and Guler is producing convincing performances whenever opportunities arise.
There was encouragement for Diomande at the final whistle, with the Bernabeu applauding him as he left the pitch.
But his first start was ultimately less about securing his place than exposing the challenge he faces.
