Dimitry Bertaud explains Montpellier exit and World Cup ambition

Dimitry Bertaud says his departure from Montpellier HSC came without negotiations, as he prioritised regular playing time to protect his international ambitions.

Speaking publicly for the first time since leaving the Ligue 1 side, the current Forge FC goalkeeper explained that his decision was guided by the need to compete consistently ahead of key fixtures with DR Congo.

“I didn’t want to leave at any cost. What I wanted was to play, for myself and for the objectives I have in relation to the World Cup,” he said, underlining that his place with the Leopards was central to his thinking.

Bertaud revealed that remaining at his boyhood club was not actively discussed. “There were no discussions.

The club had other plans. It wasn’t the right time (yet).” According to the goalkeeper, the absence of a shared vision with Montpellier’s management made a contract extension unrealistic.

Faced with limited prospects and the club’s intention to move in a different direction, Bertaud opted for a transfer rather than risk stagnation.

He indicated that continuing without regular minutes could have harmed both his development and his standing with the national team coaching staff.

Now based in North America, Bertaud believes the move offers him stability and the opportunity to build momentum ahead of crucial World Cup qualifying play-offs scheduled for March 2026.

Regular appearances, he suggests, will ensure he arrives with confidence and sharpness at a decisive stage for DR Congo.

The decision to leave Montpellier carried emotional weight, given his long association with the club. However, Bertaud maintains that the choice was necessary to keep his international dream alive.

By selecting a project centred on consistent playing time, the 26-year-old hopes to strengthen his case for selection and play a leading role as DR Congo pursue qualification for football’s biggest tournament.
