Diego Simeone backs Ademola Lookman to rediscover scoring touch after ending goal drought against Manchester United
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has welcomed Ademola Lookman’s return to goalscoring form after the Nigeria international ended a six-game drought in Tuesday night’s victory over Manchester United.
Lookman came off the bench to find the net at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, giving Atletico a timely boost as they secured a win over the Premier League side.
The Super Eagles forward reacted quickest to a rebound after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens parried Jonathan Davies’ effort, finishing from close range to end his barren run.
The goal offered encouragement for Lookman, who had struggled to make a consistent impact in the opening stages of the campaign. Simeone believes the forward possesses the qualities to become a decisive figure for the Spanish club, although he acknowledged that his full potential has yet to emerge consistently.
Simeone hails Lookman’s qualities
Speaking after the match, Simeone highlighted Lookman’s goalscoring record and ability to beat opponents in one-on-one situations, describing him as an important member of the squad.
“He’s a very important player, he has very good stats, he scores goals, he’s good in one-on-one situations,” Simeone said.
The Argentine tactician believes Lookman has the attacking attributes to make a significant contribution, particularly when he can translate his individual quality into consistent performances.
However, Simeone was careful not to suggest that the forward had already reached the level expected of him since joining Atletico.
“He’s not at that point where that comes through, but he’s rediscovered his scoring touch, he had the instinct to follow up the play and the rebound worked in his favor. We got a win we needed,” he explained.
Simeone’s comments reflected both his satisfaction with the goal and his expectation that Lookman will continue to improve as the season progresses.
Goal ends frustrating spell
Lookman’s strike against Manchester United was particularly significant after a difficult spell in front of goal.
The former Atalanta attacker had gone six matches without scoring before Tuesday’s encounter and had managed just one goal across all competitions prior to facing the English side.
His introduction in the second half gave Atletico another attacking option, and he made the opportunity count by following the play and reacting decisively when the ball fell into his path.
Rather than requiring an elaborate finish, the moment rewarded Lookman’s anticipation and willingness to attack the penalty area.
For a forward whose confidence can be influenced by his goalscoring output, ending the drought could provide a platform for improved performances in the coming weeks.
Lookman targets return to best form
The Nigerian will now be keen to build on his latest contribution and establish himself as a more consistent threat in Atletico’s attack.
His pace, dribbling ability and capacity to create opportunities in individual duels offer Simeone different attacking options, but the challenge will be turning those qualities into regular goals and assists.
The Atletico manager’s assessment suggests that he remains convinced of Lookman’s importance to the team while expecting more from the forward as he adapts to the demands of the campaign.
Tuesday’s goal may not, on its own, signal a complete turnaround, but it gives Lookman something positive to build on after several frustrating appearances.
With Simeone backing his abilities, the Super Eagles star will hope his finish against Manchester United marks the beginning of a more productive spell in Spain.
